What we do

Root-Power’s mission is to establish itself as one of the largest owner-operators of energy storage systems in the UK with the capabilities to design, build and operate these assets in-house.

To achieve this we have assembled a market-leading team of industry experts with extensive experience in the origination, development, construction, and operation of battery energy storage projects. Our portfolio now exceeds 2GW, with projects ranging from 10MW to 100MW.

Our remote monitoring services allow us to pre-empt issues and make timely interventions. Our goal is to maximise uptime and efficiency, providing reliable energy solutions.

January 2022

YLEM Energy establishes its battery energy storage development process, marking the beginning of a focused approach to energy storage. This foundational step set the stage for future growth. The development process became a cornerstone of YLEM Energy’s strategic initiatives.

April 2022

The battery storage portfolio reaches 63MW, showcasing YLEM Energy’s early success in expanding its energy storage capacity. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of their development process. It marks the first major milestone in their portfolio growth.

July 2022

YLEM Energy secures the 11MW/22MWh Coryton battery energy storage project, further expanding their growing portfolio. This project exemplifies their capability to originate and develop significant storage projects. It underscores their rapid progress in the energy storage sector.

October 2022

The battery storage portfolio achieves a substantial increase, reaching 474MW, demonstrating YLEM Energy’s accelerated growth. This milestone reflects their successful project ambitions and expansions. It solidifies their position as a leader in the energy storage market.

January 2023

YLEM Energy appoints a Head of Development, emphasising their commitment to strategic growth and expert project management. This appointment aims to drive further development and innovation. It enhances their leadership team with experienced oversight.

April 2023

The 34MW/68MWh Dounreay battery energy storage project is secured, significantly boosting the company’s portfolio. This project illustrates their continued expansion in the sector. It demonstrates their ability to secure large-scale projects successfully.

July 2023

The battery storage portfolio reaches an impressive 1000MW, marking a major milestone in YLEM Energy’s growth. This achievement underscores their rapid and sustained expansion. It highlights their dominance in the battery energy storage market.

October 2023

The 50MW/100MWh Broomloan battery energy storage project is secured, adding to YLEM Energy’s extensive portfolio. This project exemplifies their capability to originate and develop significant storage projects. It continues their trend of securing substantial storage projects.

January 2024

YLEM Energy’s battery energy storage portfolio reaches a remarkable 2000MW, reflecting their consistent growth and innovation. This milestone showcases their successful expansion strategy. It positions them as a major player in the energy storage industry.

April 2024

A Head of Asset Management is appointed, strengthening YLEM Energy’s focus on optimising and managing its assets. This role is crucial for maintaining and enhancing their extensive portfolio. It underscores their commitment to efficient asset management.

July 2024

    Neil Brooks

    Managing Director

    With over a decade of experience in the energy sector, Neil Brooks has spearheaded the development and delivery of more than 1GW of operational power generation and energy storage projects. His expertise spans a diverse range of power generation projects in the UK including technologies from natural gas to onshore wind to battery energy storage. Neil’s extensive experience encompasses project development, engineering design, procurement, contract negotiation, and project delivery. Before his current role at Root-Power, Neil held senior positions at YLEM Energy as Projects Director, Forsa Energy as Head of Procurement, and UK Power Reserve as Head of Projects.

    Dan Moore

    Head of Asset Management

    Dan Moore brings over 15 years of diverse experience in the power generation industry, covering traditional generation, renewables, and energy storage. As a former Asset Manager for Gore Street Capital, the UK’s first London Stock Exchange-listed energy storage fund, Dan managed energy storage assets across five power grids, totaling over 250MW. His responsibilities included optimising fleet performance to maximise revenues, fostering stakeholder relationships, and supporting the delivery of BESS safety improvements and technical initiatives. A trained engineer, Dan holds qualifications in electrical and mechanical engineering and has furthered his expertise through industry-recognized bodies such as IOSH, CITB, APM, and C&G.

    Sarah Lightfoot

    Head of Development

    Sarah Lightfoot holds a first-class master’s degree in physics from Durham University. She began her career as a Grid Connections consultant at TNEI Group, advising investors on battery storage and wind portfolio acquisitions connected to the transmission and distribution networks in the UK, conducting technical feasibility studies, and providing expert advice on the viability of energy projects. At YLEM Energy, Sarah led the Battery Storage Development team, overseeing the origination, design, and development of distribution-connected energy storage assets. Her role involved managing a team dedicated to delivering YLEM Energy’s ambitious BESS plans.

    Mike Carvell

    Head of Contracts and Procurement

    With over 10 years of experience in the energy sector, Mike Carvell is an accomplished energy procurement specialist. He has overseen the procurement and contracting for more than 650MW of flexible power generation and battery energy storage, including negotiating multiple large-scale portfolio framework agreements and industry-first turnkey contracts. Mike’s strengths in project procurement, contract negotiation, and project delivery have significantly contributed to his extensive portfolio. Before joining Root-Power, Mike held management roles at YLEM Energy as Procurement Manager, Sembcorp UK as Contracts Manager, and UK Power Reserve as Contracts Manager.
