Project Overview
Brinsworth BESS, located at Brinsworth Road, Brinsworth, Rotherham S60 5EN, is a large-scale project with a 40MW capacity and 80MWh of storage, sufficient to power 80,000 homes for two hours.
Brinsworth is the fourth BESS site that Root-Power has been awarded planning permission for in 2025, following success at sites in Yorkshire, County Durham and the Scottish Highlands in January 2025.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are poised to play an essential role in the UK’s energy transition and ability to achieve Net Zero by 2050. The UK Government expects demand for grid energy storage to rise to 20 GWH by 2035.
PRE APPLICATION
The development of the Brinsworth project began in August 2024.

This project will deliver 80MWh of energy storage, enough to power 80,000 homes.
The new BESS site will provide a Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) of 32.76% and is exceptionally well-screened by existing trees, ensuring minimal visual impact. Although the site was previously registered as green space, it was privately owned and not publicly accessible. Therefore, Root-Power’s proposal was unanimously approved by the Committee, having addressed all issues noted in previous applications – such as the underground gas pipeline needing a buffer to be maintained.
