Project Overview
Dounreay BESS, located at Dounreay, Thurso KW14 7RE, is a large-scale project with a 34MW capacity and 68MWh of storage, sufficient to power 80,000 homes for two hours.
The project adds a further 34MW to Root-Power’s growing pipeline of projects across the UK and helps towards reaching the Government’s Net Zero targets. The remote location of the site has been carefully chosen as it’s anticipated to see major overhaul in the coming years with the growth of offshore and onshore wind in the area and is positioned close to the network connection points for some of the nearby islands.
PRE APPLICATION
The development of the Dounreay project began in April 2024.

This project will deliver 68MWh of energy storage, enough to power 80,000 homes.
Located along the iconic NC500 route, this project carefully balances renewable energy generation with the preservation of the region’s stunning landscape. Due to the unique growing conditions and weather in the area, only specific types of acid grassland could be planted, requiring a substantial amount of land to ensure a net gain in biodiversity.
Through close collaboration with the local council, the site successfully achieves a 14% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), enhancing local habitats while contributing to Scotland’s sustainable energy future.
