Tillingdown Farm BESS – 12MW

Project Overview

The Tillingdown Farm BESS project is located on Tillingdown Lane, Caterham, CR3 7JA. With a capacity of 12MW and 48MWh, it will deliver power to 24,000 homes when energised in late 2025. This project is crucial for supporting the grid, especially in the Caterham area. The site was strategically chosen due to its proximity to Caterham Primary Substation, ensuring efficient and timely grid connection.

PRE APPLICATION

Root-Power developed the Tillingdown Farm project from late 2023 to mid-2024.

This project will deliver 48MWh of energy storage, enough to power 24,000 homes, and is set to be operational by late 2025.

The proximity to Caterham Primary Substation was a crucial factor, as the substation’s available capacity allowed for an accelerated project timeline, enabling an early energisation date. The 12MW capacity was carefully chosen in collaboration with UK Power Networks (UKPN) to ensure optimal use of the existing infrastructure without requiring costly or time-consuming grid reinforcements. This efficient approach makes Tillingdown Farm a key milestone for energy development in the region.
